Kitchen sponges are super easy and comfortable to use, but most of us forget that they get dirty too and accumulate bacteria in the long run. They get smelly and become unsanitary if we don’t clean them properly.

But don’t be scared! Sponges are easy to clean as well. I know, we just don’t have the time to regularly do this. However, think of the bacteria spreading around your plates, utensils and other kitchen materials if you don’t start with a clean sponge.

STORE YOUR SPONGE IN A DESIGNATED PLACE

Sponges should never be directly left on the sink without any place to hold it! Sinks do have moisture and sponges absorb it. Once they do, this is where bacteria can accumulate and grow more. Simple sponge holders can save your day!

MAKE IT A HABIT OF CLEANING YOUR SPONGE

The more dishes and utensils you wash, the more residues your sponge accumulates. It’s only practical to clean your sponge after every use to make sure that it’s ready to be used next time.

A simple mixture of water and a few drops of bleach can do the trick of disinfecting it!

CUTTING BOARDS FOR MEAT AND DISH SPONGES DON’T GET ALONG

Cutting boards usually touch meat and blood. If you use your dish sponge to also clean your cutting boards, chances are bacteria can easily spread to your table wares. Uncooked poultry products may contain bacteria that are harmful to you and your family. Anything that touches it may have been transferred with these microorganisms, so always be careful in what you use to clean them up.

KITCHEN SPONGES SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR AN ENTIRE LIFETIME!

Sponges are super cheap! Don’t go pinching your pennies when you try to use it and use it over again. Just like everything else, they do have to retire. If it starts to smell even with the use of bleach and soap, then it’s probably time to let it go.

However, cleaning doesn’t stop here! A lot more things should always be kept safe and secure for your and your family! For that, you can rely on WellSpring Cleaning Services!
